Sequence & Pack Works

Keeping Material Specifications and Packaging Records Connected

A combined project can contain a custom material, printed labels and several packaging components. These items share a commercial conversation, but they do not share one interchangeable specification. Keeping their records separate and connected makes the project easier to review. Begin with the material record. For a peptide project, this identifies the sequence or molecular target, terminal groups, modification positions and the agreed attributes of the supplied sample. Quantity and sample format belong in the same record. An analytical report then refers to the identified material and batch, with the method and results described in their own context. Changing a print colour does not change that analytical record; changing the molecular target does. Next, create the packaging record. This identifies the component, dimensions, material where specified, artwork revision and quantity. A label order should distinguish the number of designs from the number printed for each design. A box specification should describe the intended arrangement and the container dimensions used to assess fit. Packaging quantities should not be used to infer how much peptide is present in a vial or how many analytical samples were examined. The connection between the two records is a controlled product identifier. Use the same approved name or reference on the material record, the label artwork and the packing information where appropriate. Where a shortened name is needed to fit a label, keep its meaning linked to the full record. If a reference changes, identify which documents need revision rather than replacing the name in one file and leaving the others behind. During the final review, compare the actual versions selected for supply. Check the material identifier, artwork revision and pack configuration as separate items. A readable label is useful, but it is not a COA. A COA can describe the material without proving that a box fits. Treating each document according to its purpose gives both the technical and packaging teams a clearer basis for their decisions.
